Important changes in legislation are currently being proposed which will affect all working within the Spiritualist movement, mediums, clairvoyants, and anyone who works with Spirit. The existing laws governing what may and may not be permissible are covered by an act of parliament known as the Fraudulent Mediums Act 1951. This act replaced the Witchcraft Act, which was used to persecute us for many years, and was finally repealed and replaced following the death of Helena Duncan, a famous medium, as a direct result of police intervention during a trance demonstration.
Under the current act, it is the responsibility of the complainant to prove that the medium is fraudulent. However, proposals to repeal the law, and replace it with Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading, mean that the onus will now be upon the medium to prove that they are not. It does not take a great leap of imagination to visualise the potential for prosecution and persecution this new law will bring to our religion.
From individuals with grudges, to other less tolerant faith based organisations, the doors will be open to unfounded and unsubstantiated accusations which will result, at best, in a time wasting distraction from our work, and at worst, to a potential five year prison sentence.
Other than the Church of England, Spiritualism is the ONLY legally recognised religion in the UK. Spiritualism is a properly constituted religion recognised by an act of parliament. Spiritualism is a belief in life after death and one part of its practice is to show this through mediumship. Whilst I agree that those who are deliberately fraudulent should be prosecuted, it should be remembered that Mediums are members of the British public and under Part 2 of the Equality Act 2006, discrimination is prohibited on the grounds of religion or philosophical belief in the following areas:
education
the provision of goods, facilities or services
the management of premises
the exercising of public functions
HAVE A VOICE
We will be distributing letters at the Angel Centre for you to sign, which will then be sent to John Hutton MP, The Secretary for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform at the Houses of Parliament. Please do participate in this initiative, and help us to protect your right to attend our centre and enjoy our evenings. Further action is planned to oppose the changes, and we will keep this page updated, so please do watch for more information as it becomes available.
